This book is chock full of
goodies relating to sail trim. Written almost in outline form, various
sailing conditions are described and all the necessary check lists
relating to trim are shown.
The problem is that
the amount of explanation given is oftentimes limited to a short phrase
so a new sailor will often end up not knowing why a particular technique
is supposed to be done based on the conditions.
Also,
the problem with the outline form is that without some basis for
remembering the logic, it becomes a "memorization issue" since
there is not a lot of detail justifying a particular trim technique.
On
the other hand, advanced sailors who already know the logic behind the
sail trim will look at this book as a convenient summary of the issues
that need to be addressed for specific sailing conditions.
However,
in spite of all its problems, which really is related to the structure
and writing style, it is still a solid sail trim reference book. As
you discover problems in sailing you will find it important to read this
over and over.
